XKs Unlimited - Differential

The Salisbury differential was fitted to all Series I, II and III XJ-6/XJ-12 and XJ-S -- with the exception of some XJ-S (mostly in Europe) that were fitted with the Dana differential. (See page XJ143 in the print catalog or Dana differential components on the site.) There are two basic types of Salisbury differentials -- the “A”-type stub axles with two bearings and the “B”-type with three bearings. The Dana differential was fitted to (mostly European) XJ-S. No specific application information exists. So, how do you know if you have a Dana differential? The Dana differential has a completely flat bottom and no drain plug; the pinion flange is “square” as opposed to round and the stub axle bearing retainers are secured by three bolts (as opposed to five on a Salisbury differential).
